The Steel Yard is giving its 20th Iron Pour a three-act build, and by the finale, giant metal sculptures will be burning. This year, the Providence industrial arts nonprofit is stretching its signature event across three Saturdays, beginning with a daytime production pour and ending November 14 with roughly 2,000 pounds of molten metal, thousands of sparks, and the spectacle that has drawn crowds to Sims Avenue for two decades.
Connecting the three acts is the Firebird, a creature from Slavic folklore associated with magic, hope, and transformation. The theme also reflects a period of renewal for The Steel Yard itself.
“As we rebuild The Steel Yard, and forge a stronger future, the Firebird theme felt right,” says founding and interim executive director Drake Patten. “We’ve had a trial by fire but we’re emerging with fresh focus and new ideas. We want to share that hopeful energy.”
The story starts in daylight on October 3 with Act I: Enter the Fire, a free event from 11am-4pm that brings visitors closer to the craft behind the spectacle. Artists will melt iron in a furnace and pour it into molds during a production pour, a process with roots reaching back to the Bronze Age. Blacksmithing and jewelry demonstrations, hands-on activities, a local maker market, music, and food round out the afternoon.
Act II: Summon the Firebird on October 24 moves behind the scenes. From 5-8pm, the $150 fundraiser gives guests a closer look at how artists prepare for the Iron Pour, paired with cocktails, bites from Frank & Laurie’s, dessert from Milk Thistle Kitchen, and a silent auction. The Steel Yard is leaning into the Firebird mythology here, transforming the campus into an enchanted forest and encouraging guests to dress accordingly. Tickets can be purchased here.
Then the buildup pays off.
On November 14, Act III: Awaken the Kingdom brings the Iron Pour itself to life. Artists will channel molten iron across large-scale sculptures, setting off fire and thousands of sparks against the night sky. Doors open at 4pm, with music, food trucks, drinks, and Firebird imagery carrying the theme through the finale. Attendance is capped at 1,000, and $45 tickets go on sale October 25.
This year, the Firebird won’t stay confined to Sims Avenue either. For the first time, The Steel Yard is inviting Providence businesses to create themed cocktails, dishes, window displays, and other nods to the Iron Pour, with a citywide map planned for the season. All three events take place at The Steel Yard, 27 Sims Avenue in Providence. Visit TheSteelYard.org for tickets, updates, and full event details.
