Developed over nine months with industry partners and subject-matter experts, the Hemp THC-Infused Beverage Service Training gives servers, bartenders, managers, and owners a clear roadmap for navigating a fast-evolving category. Rhode Island is now the first state hospitality association in the country to offer a comprehensive certification focused entirely on THC-infused beverage service.
Licensed restaurants, bars, and retailers in Rhode Island are allowed to sell hemp-derived THC drinks that meet state requirements for potency, labeling, and age verification. These beverages fall under the state’s hemp framework rather than the adult-use cannabis system, and while on-premises service is permitted, the rules can feel murky without guidance. That’s where the new training steps in.
“With THC beverages entering mainstream hospitality settings, operators need clear guidelines and practical training,” said Farouk Rajab, president and CEO of RI Hospitality. “This certification helps establishments protect their guests, support their staff, and stay compliant in a rapidly evolving regulatory environment.”
The timing isn’t accidental. Recent regulatory changes, including a pause on new THC beverage licenses for restaurants and bars, have highlighted the need for standardized education. RI Hospitality is also working closely with policymakers and will participate in a forthcoming state-led study on THC beverage service and public safety.
Offered online for $45 through Train321.com, the course covers everything from legal age requirements and serving sizes to basic dosing principles, onset times, and how the body metabolizes THC. Participants also learn how to spot signs of overconsumption and respond appropriately, along with best practices around compliance and liability.
The structure mirrors familiar programs like ServSafe®, and those who pass the exam earn a three-year certification from RI Hospitality. “Hospitality businesses want to do the right thing, and that begins with education,” Rajab said. “This program gives servers, bartenders, managers, and owners the tools they need to navigate this new category confidently and responsibly.”
Industry partners are backing the effort, too. “We applaud RI Hospitality for their pioneering work,” said Matt Przygoda of Craft Collective Homegrown. “This training equips hospitality professionals with the knowledge they need to responsibly serve hemp-derived beverages.” For more information, contact RI Hospitality at 401-223-1120 or info@rihospitality.org.
