A global ocean-tech event is crossing the Atlantic for the first time, and Newport is where it plans to land.
Ocean Business USA will run September 28-30, 2027, at Safe Harbor New England Boatworks, marking the first North American edition of an event that has spent two decades in the U.K. More than 1,500 industry professionals and 100-plus exhibitors are expected to attend.
The interesting part won’t be confined to booth displays. More than 75 live demonstrations are planned from the docks, giving engineers, researchers, students, operators, and other attendees a chance to see marine equipment working on the water and talk directly with the people behind it.
That setup reveals a side of Newport that can get overshadowed by sailboats and summer weekends. The area sits within a concentration of ocean-science, maritime-defense, and research organizations, with Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport nearby and deep-water infrastructure already in place.
Chris Ostrander, CEO of the Marine Technology Society, calls Ocean Business “a working week on the water,” where attendees can experience new technologies firsthand and build connections across the industry.
The three-day event will also include classroom training, networking, and exhibits covering autonomous systems, offshore energy, maritime defense, ocean science, academia, and research.
Rhode Island Commerce, the Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce, the Ocean Tech Hub, and the University of Rhode Island are supporting the event.
