Posted

In Rhode Island, the New Year doesn’t ease in quietly. It arrives with shrieks of laughter, clouds of breath in the winter air, and hundreds of brave souls charging straight into the Atlantic. Polar plunges have become a beloved January 1 ritual across the state, blending icy adrenaline with generosity, costumes, and causes that matter. Whether you’re plunging headfirst, tiptoeing in with friends, or cheering from the sand wrapped in a blanket, these events are about starting the year doing something bold and doing some good while you’re at it.

New Year’s Day Dip in the Bay
Now in its third year, this community-forward plunge at Barrington Beach invites participants and spectators alike to ring in the New Year with a refreshing dip. Donations raised support the local food shelter Tap-In and the Barrington Lions Club Scholarship Fund, with the Barrington Business & Community Association splitting proceeds evenly between the two causes.

North Kingstown Take the Plunge Polar Plunge

A free community event at North Kingstown Town Beach featuring games, a polar bear photo opportunity, and warm beverages for sale, this plunge is especially welcoming for first-timers looking for a lower-pressure experience.

Now in its 15th year, this Charlestown plunge benefits RICAN and honors the memory of Kay Beaudreau and Ralph Craig. A post-plunge party at Breachway Grill keeps the momentum going with food and live music.
