When a culinary figure as iconic as Jacques Pépin turns 90, you celebrate – ideally with foie gras, fresh pasta, and a glass of Cognac in hand. The Jacques Pépin Foundation’s (JPF) 90/90 Dinner Series is doing just that, with exclusive dinners happening around the nation to honor Pépin, the legendary French chef, educator, and television personality whose mark on the culinary world runs as deep as a beurre blanc. Some of Rhode Island’s finest restaurants are getting involved, offering everything from curated tasting menus to culinary weekend escapes. Each event pairs local talent with Pépin’s timeless approach to cooking and teaching, and a portion of proceeds benefits JPF’s community kitchens and initiatives.
Oberlin Hosts a New England All-Star Lineup
On April 14, chef Ben Sukle teams up with a powerhouse lineup, including Maria Meza of Dolores and Cassie Piuma of Sarma, for an eight-course feast at Oberlin, honoring Pépin’s teachings with seasonal, stylized plates and Cognac-fueled toasts.
Coastal Elegance at River Bar
Named one of Esquire’s Best New Restaurants, River Bar takes the spotlight on May 4 as chef James Wayman crafts a five-course menu centered on local seafood and umami-forward flavors. “We’re channeling Jacques through every technique and every ingredient,” says Wayman.
French Technique Meets Rhody Flair at Giusto
On May 30, the team at Newport’s Giusto joins forces with talent from Pizza Marvin, Yagi Noodles, and Frank and Laurie’s for a collaborative, French-forward tasting. Rooted in Rhode Island creativity, the evening delivers bold flavors and honors Pépin’s refined style.
End the Year with a Culinary Getaway at Ocean House
The celebration wraps up in December with a weekend at Ocean House in Watch Hill, featuring cooking classes, coastal views, and a finale dinner to remember. “This weekend is a love letter to Jacques’ lifelong mission: cook with joy, teach with heart,” says Rollie Wesen, JPF’s executive director.
