Summer in Block Island

From June through August, what to do all summer long

Posted

June

June 9-14
Block Island Restaurant Week: Add culinary adventures to your bucket list and sample the best fare the Island has to offer.

June 10-12
Block Island Walking Festival: For a modest registration fee, join three guided walks to discover roughly half the island’s nature reserves.

June 11-15
Block Island Film Festival: First-ever film festival showcases professional and student filmmakers from across the country.

June 11-16
Block Island Music Festival: A “musical gumbo” at Captain Nick’s Rock ‘n Roll Bar, bringing together talented local artists like Niki Luparelli, The Little Compton Band, and Allysen and Ava Callery.

June 23-28
Block Island Race Week: Nothing amazes quite like the sight of up to 150 colorful sailboats racing through the waters of Block Island Sound. A worldwide attraction for seafaring and shoreside fun.

July

July 4
Annual July 4th Parade & Steak Fry: Floats, bands, clowns, and kids march across the Island to celebrate our nation’s birthday, then, feed your appetite with an all-American feast featuring steak, corn on the cob, watermelon, and salad.

July 7
Block Island Country Fest: Big-name performers converge on Ballard’s waterfront hotel, where they’ll perform from morning ‘til evening. If you like what you hear, Ballard’s hosts summer jams all season long.

July 20
Block Island Barbershop Quartet Festival: The 55th installment of one of the oldest barbershop festivals in the country, starring regional male and female a cappella quartets, including the beloved Narragansett Bay Chorus of Providence.

July 27
The Great Salt Pond Swim 5: Ease into open water swimming by joining nearly 150 fellow adventurers in Block Island’s Great Salt Pond. Don’t be fooled – it’s a half-mile swim there and half-mile back, so focus on strength and stamina instead of speed.

August

August 3
Block Island Triathlon: You can swim, bike, and run across the island, but why not do all three? Start with a brisk swim from Fred Benson Town Beach, dry off to bike along the western coast, and lace up your sneaks for a sprint to the finish line.

August 4
ConserFest: A grassroots music festival on a beautiful island is awesome on its own, but ConserFest also adds a strong message about arts, the environment, and sustainable initiatives.

Annual Mary D. Ball: Live entertainment, food, drinks, and stunning view of New Harbor are trademarks of this family-friendly party where shorts and suits alike are welcome. Ticket proceeds benefit the Mary D. Ball Fund.

August 12
Reggae Fest: If you’re going to spend one summer day on a private beach on an isolated island, you should probably consider Reggae Fest at Ballard’s, with its lineup of five touring reggae outfits.

August 15
Annual House and Garden Tour: Block Island Historical Society lets you inside some of the island’s most beautiful homes and gardens, with an eye towards interesting architecture, design, and decor.

August 31
Lions Club Clambake: Labor Day weekend isn’t complete without this annual clambake. Not a shellfish fan? Landlubbers can find hamburgers, hot dogs, and sausages served up alongside chowder and mussels on Narragansett Inn’s lawn.
