FRENCH CHOCOLATE
– MUSIC OF RAMEAU, COUPERIN, AND CORETTE
A Montreal-based French Baroque ensemble:
Matthias Maute & Sophie Larivière, recorder & flute; Susie Napper, cello; David Jacques, baroque guitar
Ever since cacao reached Spain from South America in the 18th century, chocolate became the fashion of the day. The art of transforming the bitter beans into sweet chocolate was introduced to the royal court at Versailles by the Spanish. French baroque music with its exotic and delicious flavors became to the ear what chocolate is to our taste buds:
a symphony of ecstatic, delicious sensations!
“The artists’ physical involvement and infectious enjoyment were what music should always be about.” — Washington Post
